at the window

at the window, is a sequel to Finding Wyeth, 2011. Part Two.

The book was inspired by Betsy James Wyeth (1921-2020), by her dedication to the Olson House and to the legacy of her husband, Andrew Wyeth.

at the window focuses on Betsy Wyeth’s nurturing spirit, her stewardship of Wyeth’s career and  her role in the preservation of this historic property which belongs to the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine.

Shortly after they met in 1939 Betsy James introduced Andrew Wyeth to the Olsons. Christina and Alvaro became friends with Andrew and offered him a room to use as his studio. For the next 30 years, the Olson House provided Wyeth with endless inspiration.

"Wyeth never lost his excitement for the stark lines of the Olson house.  Drawing after drawing exists of it from every angle."

"While working on this last tempera he tacked several drawings to the wall. One morning he came back to paint and found they were gone. Two swallows stayed long after all the others had flown south. Then, one day, both of them were gone also."
