a tangled time
During this tangled time
we have more time
and less time
all at the same
time.
A time of uncertainty. A territory without a map.
These photographs were taken in the fields in Somerset during early morning forays into the surrounding countryside in 2016. I was an artist in residence at Hauser & Wirth Somerset.
The damp air and winter fog prevailed, the fields fallow.
My residency was a time of aloneness in an unfamiliar place.
A time of reflection and seclusion.
Since March 2020, most of the world has been in isolation.
The pandemic has affected all of us.
For me, this image of the thorny, unpruned hedge taken 4 years ago now becomes a metaphor for today. The image embodies my concept of time at this moment, tangled, shortened and stretched.
I was lucky to meet the head gardener at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. He taught me the names of the native trees and hedgerows in English and Latin. His extensive knowledge added another layer to my experience of a timeless landscape.
